Washington Monthly’s 2011 College Guide has ranked Elizabeth City State University fifth in its "Top 50 Baccalaureate Colleges."
Washington Monthly rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories:
- Social Mobility — recruiting and graduating low-income students,
- Research — producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s, and
- Service — encouraging students to give something back to their country.
To determine the rankings, Washington Monthly staffers consider criteria they deem important in ranking the nation’s higher education institutions. Washington Monthly editors declared they asked "not what colleges can do for you, but what colleges are doing for the country. Are they educating low-income students, or just catering to the affluent? Are they improving the quality of their teaching, or ducking accountability for it? Are they trying to become more productive — and if so, why is average tuition rising faster than health care costs?"
ECSU was one of 12 Historically Black Colleges and Universities to earn a spot among the publication’s top 50 baccalaureate colleges. ECSU earned an overall score of 89. Tuskegee University was ranked Number 1, with a score of 100.
An article about the rankings appears in the September/October 2011 edition of Washington Monthly 2011 College Rankings.
