Three students intern with US Coast Guard

The joint commands of the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Base are pleased to announce a new internship initiative with Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). Three ECSU students have been chosen to work at the Coast Guard Aircraft Repair and Supply Center (ARSC) in Elizabeth City this summer. Student interns will start on June 3, 2008 and continue for nine weeks ending on August 1, 2008. ECSU is using a U.S. Department of Education grant called Title III, Part B (the "Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program") to fund three students who will participate in the new internship program at the Coast Guard base this summer. It will include a stipend for the students, housing, food and transportation if needed. The grant was originally authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1965, and is designed to provide financial assistance to those institutions officially designated as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Ms. Lakeisha Moore, an Industrial Technology major with an emphasis in Computer Networking will serve as an Information Systems intern reporting to Mr. Brason Twiford, Systems Branch Chief in the Information Systems Division (ISD) of ARSC. Lakeisha will be loading Windows XP operating systems and other specialized software applications onto desktop computers. She will be installing computers and printers throughout ARSC, as well as, troubleshooting and repairing desktop computers Mr. Spencer Weeks-Jamieson, a Math major with a minor in Computer Science will be working in ARSC’s Engineering Services Division (ESD) as Tech Publications Intern for Mr. James Bronson, supervisor of Aircraft Technical Publications Branch. Spencer will be working in the ARSC Master Technical Library during the course of this project. ARSC Master Technical Library – a branch of the ESD has a requirement to electronically archive thousands of engineering records, publications, and documents. Archival data for this project is currently in paper media. These records are to be cataloged, reviewed, electronically scanned, and book marked. Digital copies of records must be verified against original paper records. Paper records will be recycled after content has been captured into electronic media and results verified for accuracy. Ms. Julian Exum, an Accounting/Business Administration major with a concentration in Management Information Systems will be working as an Accounting Intern in the Aviation Logistics Division (ALD) and reporting to Ms. Deborah McCarty, Branch Chief of the Fiscal Operations Cell. ALD’s Fiscal Branch has a requirement to review, analyze and calculate the fully burdened overhead labor rates (FBLR) for ARSC. Julian will be involved with reviewing data, conducting interviews, generating spreadsheets and producing the FBLR report. Other duties that may be assigned include reviewing, writing and revising process documentation to comply with internal control requirements. Dr. J.
