The Talking Drummer performs for ECSU

February 01, 2005 Elizabeth City State University will welcome Adebisi Adeleke, The Talking Drummer, as the guest performer for the Lyceum Series at 7 p.m. February 18, 2005 in the Floyd L Robinson Auditorium of the Fine Arts Complex. Mr. Adeleke, a Nigerian master drummer, acquired his skills while playing years for African festivities. For centuries drums served as communication tools in Africa, thus the term "talking drummer" became commonly known. During the slave trade era, drummers used them to warn Africans of the enemy’s arrival and the need to flee the area. Current use of the instrument may indicate the arrival of the king’s guests or the time the king rises from sleep. Drums are also used in weddings and other public events. The rhythm played often signifies the occasion. The drums are made from Nigeria’s Oma trees, goat skin and deer skin. As the Lyceum Series guest, Mr. Adeleke will share more history, complete demonstrations and call on the audience for limited participation. For more information, call Ms. Willa Lamb, 252-335-3587. ECSU provides the Lyceum Series free of charge for the community’s cultural enrichment.
