The Art Department presents “Universe of the Mind”

The Art Department at Elizabeth City State University presents &quotUniverse of the Mind,&quot a collection of sculptures by East Carolina University Professor Hanna Jubran, in the University Gallery of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. Jubran is a professor of art and sculpture in the ECU School of Art and Design. He earned a MFA in sculpture with a minor in ceramics and a BFA in sculpture/ceramic with a minor in painting and drawing from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Jubran’s work addresses the concepts of time, movement, balance and space. Each sculpture occupies and creates its own reality influenced by its immediate surroundings. Jubran says his work does not rely on one media to evoke the intended response, but takes advantage of compatible materials such as wood, granite, steel, stainless steel, iron and bronze. &quotIf a goal is sought either consciously or unconsciously in the form of a work of art, one must solve innumerable problems and make innumerable decisions in order to achieve that end,&quot Jubran said. &quotOne of many decisions I have made is maintaining and preserving the natural quality of the materials I work with. Each sculpture occupies and creates its own reality influenced by its immediate surroundings.&quot Jubran has participated in hundreds of exhibits, international symposiums and conferences. Some of his most recent activities include: The creation of &quotA Monument to a Century of Flight&quot in Kitty Hawk, N C The International Sculpture Biennale in Chaco, Argentina The Elements of the Earth Symposium at Pedvale Sculpture Park in Sabile, Latvia The International Wood Carving Symposium in St. Blasien, Germany and many more. Every symposium Jubran participates in, the sculpture created is retained as part of the town or the organization’s permanent collection. Hanna is consistent in his pursuit of creating enjoyable sculptures for private and corporate collections. He’s won many awards including the Great Eastern Management Prize for Best in Show 2005-2006 from the ArtInPlace Foundation of Charlottesville, Va. In addition to the work on display now in ECSU’s University Gallery, Jubran has a sculpture on display outside the Fine Arts Center. The exhibit at ECSU is free, and open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
