Take A Child Outside Week, September 24 – 30

Elizabeth City, NC – Port Discover is a partner with the national "Take A Child Outside" week, September 24 – 30.&nbsp As part of the weeklong program, Port Discover is sponsoring "Nature’s Treasure Hunt," a free self-guided nature scavenger hunt in downtown Elizabeth City.&nbsp In addition, Port Discover encourages children and families to participate in the Backyard Birdwatch and contribute to a worldwide bird count database.&nbsp Children and adults can pick-up the Nature’s Treasure Hunt and Backyard Birdwatch materials at Port Discover, Tuesday – Friday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
For other opportunities and suggestions for encouraging children in the outdoors, visit www.takeachildoutside.org.&nbsp The book Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv inspired this effort.&nbsp Port Discover will also have suggestions and recommendations available in the Center.&nbsp The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is coordinating "Take A Child Outside" week in North Carolina.

Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits.&nbsp Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools.&nbsp Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.
