ECSU congratulates Stella T. Duhaime as the Bearer of the Mace for the university’s 150th commencement held on May 8. Duhaime graduated with a 3.958 grade point average. She completed her student teaching in Pasquotank County and plans to teach at an area school. Duhaime, a mother of two, worked full-time while earning her degree. She earned her degree by attending classes held on campus and by taking online courses.&nbsp She was one of 21 graduates from the Department of Education and 249 graduates from ECSU. &nbsp
The honor of bearing the mace is reserved for the non-transfer, graduating senior who holds the highest cumulative grade point average. The ECSU Mace is 70 inches tall and consists of three dynamic centers of significant components. The focal point is a replica of a Viking’s head cast in bronze, with brass rays extending from the center depicting knowledge, enlightenment, wisdom and democracy. A bronze seal of the university adorns the reverse side. ECSU Professor Alexis Joyner, the chairperson of the ECSU Art Department, designed the mace.
