Mathematics Graduate Students Complete Oral Thesis Defense

As Elizabeth City State University’s spring 2020 semester comes to a close, more and more students are finishing their work remotely and that includes candidates for master’s degrees. Recently seven Master of Science in Applied Mathematics students defended their master’s thesis online via Zoom.
“Graduate students in the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering Technology worked hard to finish their degrees amid the COVID-19 pandemic by scheduling their committee chair and members so they could defend their thesis online via Zoom,” said Dr. Kenneth Jones, department chair.
According to Dr. Jones, two of the five students are currently educators, while the remaining five students plan to take jobs in industries such as engineering, system science, and data analytics. Five of the students will also be moving on to complete their doctorate degrees in the fall, he said.
All seven students will receive their Master of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in community college teaching and applied mathematics. The seven graduate students are:

After graduation, Mr. McKoy will work on his doctorate in computational science and engineering at North Carolina A & T State University in Greensboro, and Mr. Rawls will work on his doctorate in system science at Binghamton University in New York. Mr. Benton, Mr. Blue and Ms. Simmons have applied to PhD programs at North Carolina A & T State University.
