ECSU faculty, staff and students in the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology will present their latest research this week. It’s the ninth annual Research Week. Students will make oral presentations as well as poster presentations. On Friday, nearly 1,000 area school students are expected to arrive for brief lectures and hands-on demonstrations. Dr. Linda Hayden, director of the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing, said Research Week is a good time for youngsters to see what their current science courses can lead to. "During Research Week, we bring attention to outstanding research topics and the students who major in math, computer science, chemistry and other sciences. We are reaching out to the community and to provide visiting students and teachers with a glimpse of the topics that college students are expected to learn." "We hope to encourage the visiting students to focus on science courses and realize the many (career) opportunities available for people who earn college degrees in math, the sciences, engineering and technology." Dr. Ali Khan, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, said research week is also a great time for students to share their knowledge with people other than those majoring in the sciences. "We are cultivating a research culture that supports and nurtures the scholarly activity of our graduate and undergraduate students as well as our faculty. The faculty and staff who assist the students with research week are to be commended." The presentations are open to the public and students from all university departments are encouraged to attend.
