Je’aime Powell, an Elizabeth City State University alumnus, received the Student Leadership-Graduate Level Award at the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington. The award was presented during the conference’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities Engineering Deans’ Power Breakfast. Powell serves as the grid manager, graduate researcher and network analyst for ECSU’s Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) under the direction of Dr. Linda B. Hayden. Powell earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science with a minor in aviation, and a master’s degree in applied mathematics, with a concentration in remote sensing, from ECSU. By doing research as a student for CERSER, and later becoming ECSU’s Polar Grid Project manager, he has found a way to integrate both of his passions in a way that can help others. Powell’s role as grid manager helps provide funding and research opportunities for CERSER. In addition to managing major research projects and mentoring students, Powell is pursuing a Ph.D. in computer information systems from NOVA Southeastern University.
