“Learn to Play” Golf Clinics held in July

June 19, 2006 On July 3, the first of five "Learn to Play" Golf Clinics will be held at the Albemarle Golf Park on Weeksville Road in Elizabeth City (NC), focusing on techniques for men golfers. The golf clinics have a two-fold purpose. Participants will learn or improve their game and the proceeds will support a scholarship fund for the Elizabeth City State University Student Golf Team. The clinics are held for golfers or aspiring golfers. Each of the five clinics will begin at 6:30 p.m. each Monday during the month of July at the Albemarle Golf Park. ECSU Golf Coach Lavern Jones, named by the CIAA as the 2006 "Golf Coach of the Year," will conduct the golf clinics. The first 10 participants to register for the clinics will receive a dozen golf balls. The clinic donation of $100 per person will be managed by the ECSU Foundation-Golf Divas Fund. The Golf Divas Fund was established by a group of female golfers who organized in 2003 for the joy of the sport and to support the ECSU golf program. Each member of the Golf Divas initially made a $100 contribution to the fund. The fund has grown continuously now exceeding $5,000. Plans are currently being made to endow the scholarship fund so that the interest can be used to generate scholarships annually. To participate, contact Ms. Bettie Mitchell Lyons, coordinator and founder of the Golf Divas Fund and Development Researcher for the ECSUs Division of Institutional Advancement, at (252) 335-3603. Checks should be made payable to the "Elizabeth City State University Foundation-Golf Divas Fund."
