Elizabeth City State University proudly announces four students served as Bearers of the Mace at the 144th Commencement Convocation on May 5. The privilege of bearing the mace is usually reserved for the non-transfer graduating senior with the highest cumulative grade point average. However, four young ladies earned a cumulative grade point average of 4.0. In addition, two of the students are twins with the same major. Their names, majors and hometowns follow. Seated left to right: Brittany N. Byers, a senior from Charlotte, NC majoring in Social Work. Britney D. Gregory, a senior from Elizabeth City NC majoring in Business Administration & Accounting. Martha B. Taylor, a senior from Cofield, NC majoring in Elementary Education. Mary B. Taylor, a senior from Cofield, NC majoring in Elementary Education. ECSU Art Professor Alexis Joyner designed the 70-inch mace which consists of three dynamic centers of significant components. The focal point is a replica of the Vikings’ head, cast in bronze, with brass rays extending from the center depicting knowledge, enlightenment, wisdom and democracy. A bronze seal of the university adorns the reverse side. The hand held baton depicts the Viking head cast in bronze. Administrators posted the 70 inch tall structure on the stage during the May 5 commencement and allowed the four seniors to bear smaller, hand-held honors batons made in it the image of the Mace.
