A new Community Music School at Elizabeth City State University will begin offering music lessons to students&nbspon August 24th.&nbsp Applications&nbspwill be accepted between August 1 and August 26. Established music teachers in the area will serve as faculty for the new Community Music School. Given the shortage of pianists in the Albemarle and the shortage of string players (violin, viola, cello and double bass), pupils who are interested in those instruments are strongly encouraged to enroll. However, students (age 7 and above)&nbspcan take lessons in voice, woodwind, brass, percussion and guitar.
Lessons will be offered three weekday afternoons between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The Community Music School will offer classes in theory and ear training. Lessons will be taught in the ECSU Music Department in the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center.
Registration materials are available in the office of the Community Music School director, Mrs. Rae Newson, room #204 of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center and in the music director’s office, #226 of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. Payment can be made at the ECSU Cashier’s Window (Marion D. Thorpe Administration Building) after registration papers have been completed. The fee schedule for music lessons, the theory class and ensembles is available in the ECSU Music Department, room #226 of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center.
Elizabeth City State University extends great appreciation to Arts of the Albemarle for a $2,500 grant that will support the effort to increase the number of musicians in the area.
