ECSU observes American and International Education Week Nov. 12-17 2012

November 07 2012 For 48 years Elizabeth City State University has celebrated International Week. This year as in previous years the celebration is combined with the celebration of American Education Week. The weeklong celebration is slated for Nov. 12 through 17 with the theme "Great Public Schools — A Basic Right and our Responsibility: Meeting Global Challenges through Education!" Events include films aviation symposium a health fair faculty forum international tea and guest speakers including Ambassador Daniel Ohene Agyekum Ghana’s ambassador to the United States and North Carolina Teacher of the Year Darcy Grimes of Bethel Elementary School in Watauga County N.C. An annual highlight is the International Dinner which will be held Nov. 16 at the K.E. White Graduate and Continuing Education Center on the ECSU campus. The event features food music and dance from across the globe. Participants also will be dressed in attire reflective of their native culture. The events are open to the public. - Movie: "Rabbit-Proof Fence" a 2002 adventure-drama rated PG. 10 a.m. at the Walter N. and Henrietta B. Ridley Student Complex.
- Health and Fitness Assessment Fair: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Melvyn N. and Vonda Reed Riley Wellness Center.
- Faculty Forum: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pharmacy Complex.
- Student Forum: 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Walter N. and Henrietta B. Ridley Student Complex.
Tuesday Nov. 13 2012
- Annual American Education Week Assembly: 10 a.m. in the auditorium of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. Guest speaker: Ms. Darcy Grimes North Carolina Teacher of the Year.
- International dance lessons/show: 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Walter N. and Henrietta B. Ridley Student Complex.
- International Aviation and Aerospace Symposium: 6 to 10 p.m. in room 104 of the ECSU Pharmacy Complex.
Wednesday Nov. 14 2012
- Student movie night: "My Name is Khan" a 2010 biography-drama rated PG. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Walter N. and Henrietta B. Ridley Student Complex.
Thursday Nov. 15 2012
- International Tea: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Willie and Jacqueline Gilchrist Education and Psychology Complex. Delicious teas and coffees that are favored around the world will be highlighted and a select group of teachers and writing contest winners will be recognized.
Friday Nov. 16 2012
- International Dinner: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the K.E. White Graduate and Continuing Education Center. This annual event brings guests to campus to join students staff and faculty for an evening of international food music dance and more. Attire: Garments outfits and accessories that reflect your native culture or another culture that you admire. Keynote speaker: Ambassador Daniel Ohene Agyekum of the Ghana Embassy in Washington.
Saturday Nov. 17 2012
- Student Activity Day: Learn more about rural segregated schools of Pasquotank County from 1925 to 1951 2 p.m. at the Museum of the Albemarle.
- Game Day: Board games card games trivia and more. Noon to 2 p.m. at the stage (first floor) of the Walter N. and Henrietta B. Ridley Student Complex.
- International Exposure: An evening of fashion dance and a speaker. 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. Doors open at 6 p.m.
- Culture Shock: An evening of international music. Williams Hall from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. (fee $5 with ECSU student ID $7 without ECSU student ID).
