June 21, 2005Elizabeth City State University, ECSU, has been awarded a $30,000 grant from the National Writing Project to operate the Northeast North Carolina Writing Project (NNCWP). Dr. Joseph Lisowski, an ECSU professor, a published author and poet, will direct the project. The National Writing Project is a highly successful federal program designed to enhance the writing and learning of America’s school children through a "teachers teaching teachers" model. Components of the program include a Summer Institute and in-service teacher workshops. The NNCWP will offer a five-week Summer Institute at ECSU for successful writing teachers to further develop their own writing and teaching skills by sharing successful strategies they use in their classrooms. The institute will be open to public and private school teachers in grades kindergarten through 12 who value writing as a tool for learning and thinking. College teachers are also eligible to participate. The institute will run from June 27 through July 28 in room #106 of McLendon Hall. Upon completion of the Summer Institute, these teachers will be available to local school districts to provide in-service training for other teachers in their schools and districts throughout the coming academic year.
