ECSU celebrates American Education Week

The School of Education and Psychology at Elizabeth City State University will observe American Education Week, November 13-17. An assembly will be held at 10 a.m. on November 16 in the auditorium of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Complex featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, the superintendent of Bertie County Schools. The program is held to commend area educators and Teachers of the Year from 19 surrounding counties. Dr. Collins-Hart received her undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, Masters in English Education and Educational Administration from East Carolina University and her Doctorate in Educational Policy and Leadership from the University of Kansas. She came to Bertie County from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System where she was serving as the Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services. She has also served as Assistant Superintendent in the Lawrence, Kansas school system in addition to serving as Director of Curriculum. Dr. Collins-Hart has experience as an elementary school principal, a curriculum and instructional specialist, a director of educational talent search and Upward Bound, a high school assistant principal, an adjunct Instructor and a Coordinator of Field Experiences and Student Teaching at the university level. She served as a reading lab teacher and at North Edgecombe High School and an English teacher at Tarboro High School. Dr. Collins-Hart has won numerous honors and awards including the Excellence in Equity Award presented by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro National Alliance of Black Educators, the Leadership Roundtable for Senior Executives Graduate Bell Leadership from Chapel Hill to name just a few. She has authored many noteworthy publications and delivered countless presentations, particularly on minority student achievement, closing the achievement gap and nurturing and mentoring future teachers. She has participated on numerous boards and community organizations and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Dr. Collins-Hart is married to Mike Hart and has two children, Michael Hart, Jr., who is finalizing a Master’s Degree at Hampton University, and daughter Mia Renetta, who is also a Hampton University graduate, completed her Master’s Degree in Education and is now in her second year teaching in the Durham Public School System.
