Among the students honored during the School of Business &amp Economics’ 2012 Honors &amp Awards Recognition Program were students honored for their achievements in the study of accounting. Accounting is an old profession and is still a very important one. Even during periods of economic recession, the demand for skilled accountants grows. The most prestigious accountants are those that achieve the designation of Certified Public Accountant (CPA).Â
One requirement for achieving the CPA designation is to pass the CPA Exam. The exam is a two-day exam consisting of four parts that cover accounting and various other economic and business topics. Each year the North Carolina State Board of CPA Examiners provides two "Coupons" that allow two graduating accounting majors to take the CPA Exam at no cost. The value of each coupon is over $1,000. Recipients of the coupons are selected based on their perceived ability to pass the exam as demonstrated by their academic performance and their stated intent to take the exam during the coupon period.
Another award provided for graduating accounting majors is the Becker CPA Review Scholarship that allows students to take the review course without cost. The Becker CPA Review is a comprehensive course designed to prepare students to pass the CPA Exam. The value of the course is also more than a $1,000.
These two awards are most valuable when used together. For the first time at ECSU the awards have been won in concert by two students: Cassandra Dixon who graduated December 2011 and Jessica Casey who will graduate December 2012. Cassandra received her Becker CPA Review Scholarship from the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and Jessica received her Becker CPA Review Scholarship from Becker upon the recommendation of a faculty member.
The North Carolina CPA Foundation provides scholarships to continuing accounting students based on academic performance in accounting and a written essay. This year the NC CPA Foundation awarded scholarships in the amount of $1,250 each to two ECSU students: Rondell Cherry and Kelly Westbrook.
The faculty of the Walter R. Davis School of Business also congratulates winners of the Southern Bank Scholarship, Matravia Seymore and Derick Smith. Winners are selected based upon students in good standing with the school and completion of an essay.
