Dr. Ronald Blackmon serves as biology professor at ECSU

Dr. Ronald Blackmon will serve as a professor of biology in the ECSU School of Mathematics, Science and Technology in the 2008-2009 academic year. Dr. Blackmon brings over 20 years of experience to the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology as a scientist, professor, advisor, and administrator. For the last three years he served as Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. From 2002-2005, Dr. Blackmon served as the dean of the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology. While dean, Dr. Blackmon guided the development of new master’s degree programs in biology and mathematics. In addition, he was involved in the extensive planning for the UNC-ECSU joint pharmacy (PharmD) program which admitted the first class in fall of 2005. His specific research interests include the biochemistry and developmental regulation of antioxidant enzymes. He has directed more than forty undergraduate research projects and honors theses in biology. To support student training and research activities, he has garnered millions of dollars in extramural funds from federal, state and private agencies. Former students he advised and instructed have matriculated into graduate programs in cell and molecular biology, animal science, health education and public health as well as in medical and dental schools. In recent years, significant numbers of students trained and mentored by Dr. Blackmon have obtained employment in pharmaceutical companies, government laboratories and biotechnology companies. As an active professor and department chair, Dr. Blackmon also served as the advisor for the students in the ECSU Biotechnology Program Initiative. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he came to ECSU from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Research Labs in Gainesville, Florida where he was a research biochemist/molecular biologist. Blackmon holds degrees from highly recognized universities: B.S. degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry from Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware. M.S. degree in Zoology from Howard University in Washington, D.C. Ph.D. degree in Cell Biology from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
