On February 5, 2011, 500 middle school students from across northeastern North Carolina visited ECSU to cheer on the Vikings women’s and men’s basketball teams and to learn more about college life at ECSU. The Chancellor’s Young Voyagers Program, which is in its third year, was initiated by Chancellor Willie J. Gilchrist to get students thinking seriously about higher education as early as their middle school years.&nbsp
"As a former principal and superintendent, I realize the importance of motivating&nbsp young people to pursue a college degree. Therefore, I established the Chancellor’s Young Voyagers Program to encourage middle school students to stay in school and to make sure they take all the right courses to insure they will be admitted as college freshmen," said Gilchrist.&nbsp
"We want all of these young people to pursue higher education, and of course, we hope they will enroll here at ECSU."
While on campus, students met Chancellor Gilchrist, learned about admission requirements and interacted with current ECSU students. The middle school guidance counselors attended a special session with ECSU Admissions staff to learn more about admission requirements, which will be helpful as they advise students about courses and potential colleges.&nbsp As part of the program, admissions counselors will visit area middle schools to strengthen relationships with counselors and students.
