Akeadra Bell, a junior from Elizabeth City, NC, majoring in chemistry at Elizabeth City State University, is the recipient of a $25,000 UNCF Merck Undergraduate Fellowship Award. Each year, 15 applicants are selected, nationally, based on their GPA, their demonstrated interest in their own scientific education and a career in scientific research or engineering, and their ability to perform in a laboratory or engineering environment. Bell has a 4.0 grade point average. Bell applied for the fellowship which covers tuition and fees for an upcoming semester. The fellowship provides the ECSU Department of Chemistry, Geology and Physics up to $10,000 for research initiatives. Each UNCF Merck Undergraduate Fellow is paired with a mentor/s and becomes eligible for an internship at a Merck facility. Those internships are awarded to the top five recipients among their 15 candidates. Bell is one of them and she is scheduled to complete an internship at the Merck Biomedical Research Laboratory in New Jersey over the summer.
