Alumnus Anthony Lewis speaks for spring commencement
April 13 2005 Elizabeth City State University welcomed alumnus Mr. Anthony A. Lewis president of Verizon Washington DC as the keynote speaker for the 140th Commencement at 9 a.m. May 7 2005 in the Vaughan Center. As president of Verizon Washington DC Mr. Lewis oversees all of Verizon’s operations including regulatory and financial matters in the nation’s capital. Previously Lewis held the title of executive director business planning. His responsibilities included the coordination and linkage of strategic policy and initiatives affecting Verizon’s business units and its regulatory organization. Mr. Lewis joined The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia now Verizon Virginia in 1986 as a group manager in the operator services department. Since then he has held a succession of positions with increasing responsibilities in product line management traffic engineering and planning sales regulatory and public policy. His volunteer service includes memberships on the DC Chamber of Commerce’s Governing Board the Board of Associates of Gallaudet University the board of directors of the Greater Washington Board of Trade the Workforce Investment Council DC CAPS the Washington Performing Arts Society the Federal City Council the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington the United Way National Capital Area the McLean Orchestra and the National Eagle Leadership Institute. Mr. Lewis serves as a conductor for the South Lakes High School spring musical production and as a percussionist with the Heritage Fellowship United Church of Christ Gospel Choir. Mr. Lewis graduated from Elizabeth City State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business in 1986 the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Leadership Development Program in 1996 the Johns Hopkins Leadership Development Program in 1996 and the Johns Hopkins University with a Master of Science degree in business administration in 1999.
