WRVS FM 89.9 expand its selection of public affairs shows

WRVS-FM 89.9, Elizabeth City State University’s public radio station, has long promoted the station as the voice of the community. Staff there are launching four new public affairs shows that justifies that claim. Each week, they will welcome to the airwaves key members of the community to discuss current events and more. The half-hour shows are designed to inform current and new residents of local developments. Below is a list of the titles of the radio shows hosted in part by Clay Mercer, production director for WRVS-FM 89.9. &quotChamber Chat&quot is scheduled for broadcast on the second Wednesday of the month featuring Kelly Thorsby, president of Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce. She will explain how this membership organization serves as the central agency to improve the business environment in our community. This show begins in January of 2015. &quotConversations with the Chancellor&quot is scheduled for broadcast every fourth Wednesday of the month featuring ECSU Chancellor Stacey Franklin Jones. She will share university developments of interest to our community. It begins on November 26. &quotNENC Sports Radio Show&quot is scheduled for broadcast on Thursdays at 7 p.m. and replay on Saturdays at 1 p.m. Owen Hassell and Jimmy LaRoue, sports staff at The Daily Advance, are show hosts. This weekly sports talk show provides in-depth reports on high school and college athletics throughout northeast North Carolina. &quotHigh School Game of the Week&quot begins in December. Clay Mercer will provide the play-by-play commentary of high school varsity basketball games. Officials at each school will select students who will participate in the production of the games and conduct halftime interviews. The following two shows are already on the air: &quotCommunity Corner&quot is broadcast on the first Wednesday of the month featuring Charlotte Underwood, director of the Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. She will highlight events and happenings in northeast North Carolina. Special guests from the community may also appear on these shows. &quotCommunity Corner&quot will reinforce the goal of the Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau– to increase awareness and generate travel to the Elizabeth City area for vacationers, leisure travelers, groups and meetings. &quotThe HBCU Nation&quot is broadcast Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. Anthony Ray, an ECSU alumnus, highlights issues and developments at the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Previous guests on the show include Rep. G.K. Butterfield, U.S. Sen. Kay Hagen and educator Charlie Nelms, Ed.D.
