Viking Impact Month targets hunger in northeast NC

Following the success of last year’s Feed the Need Food Drive, ECSU will again partner for the Food Bank of the Albemarle for the 30th Annual Walk for Hunger. The event is part of Viking Impact Month, an initiative implemented in 2012 to incorporate community service into ECSU’s Homecoming festivities. The walk will kick off a week-long schedule of Homecoming events beginning on Sunday, October 13. Taking place at 12:30pm at Waterfront Park, the Walk for Hunger is the Food Bank of Albemarle’s largest annual fundraiser. As northeast North Carolina’s Feeding America affiliate, the Food Bank of the Albemarle serves 15 counties and 130 partner agencies in an effort to assist the estimated 1 in 5 area residents facing hunger. An element of competition will again play a role in this year’s Viking Impact Month challenge. Campus groups will be divided into five categories and will compete against one another to raise money for the Food Bank of the Albemarle. The categories include academic departments, campus clubs and organizations, Greek organizations, administrative offices and athletic teams. The winning group in each category will win prizes and be recognized during halftime at the Homecoming football game on October 19th at Roebuck Stadium. Students, employees, alumni and community members may choose to participate in one of two ways. They can either take part in the Walk on October 13th, raising pledges in honor of the campus group of their choice, or they can donate directly online in honor of their group. Online registration and donation forms will be available on the ECSU Homecoming website, www.ecsuhomecoming.com , beginning Monday, September 9th. Regular updates will be posted on the Homecoming website and social media sites regarding which groups are in the lead and how much they have raised.
