On Wednesday, August 09, 2017, Elizabeth City State University unveiled its new logo and tagline during the Faculty and Staff Opening Conference, exciting faculty and staff as the university moves forward with change, while maintaining its mission to promote economic, social, and environmental progress for the people of northeastern North Carolina, and beyond.
In preparation for ECSU’s next phase of evolution, the university’s Office of Communications and Marketing partnered with The Sax Agency, a Los Angeles-based marketing firm, to develop a recognizable identity that is modern and fresh, yet, embodied the institution’s historical legacy.
From Sept. 2016 to April 2017, through focus groups, online and in-person surveys, and individual interviews, hundreds of faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members and other key stakeholders participated in a discussion about ECSU’s perceived strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats – encouraging a dialogue that encompassed the perception of the university’s visual (logo) and verbal (tagline) identity. The results of these constituent interactions led to the development of a new logo and tagline.
The new logo, designed in Keplar font – a modern typeface known for its elegance and warmth – begins with a depiction of Lane Hall, the oldest building on campus and stands upon the words Founded 1891, symbolizing an institution that continues to flourish, does not forget its beginnings, and is rooted in history and tradition. Over the next several months, the logo and tagline will become integrated across the campus community to become part of the institutions marketing and promotional materials.
The institution’s mascot, the Viking, historically is known for growing through constant discovery and triumph of new territories. Similar to the ECSU Viking, many people come to the institution to teach, learn, or discover; however, they depart from the institution equipped with invaluable skills and supported by a network of family, friends and community. The tagline, “Come to Discover. Leave to Conquer.,” exemplifies this journey.
As Elizabeth City State University prepares for the upcoming academic year, the prospect of NC Promise, and future years of advancement, it is poised with a distinguishable visual and verbal identity representative of a premier institution within the University of North Carolina institution system.
