University Players present, “Working” October 13, 14 and 15

October 11, 2005 The University Players, Elizabeth City State Univesity’s theatrical troupe, proudly announces the first show of the year, &quotWorking&quot at 8 p.m. October 13, 14 and 15 in the G.R. Little Theater. This musical is based upon Studs Terkel’s 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people telling us what they do for a living and what they like or dislike about their jobs. Stephen Schwartz (Godspell) transformed these interviews into a series of songs, Craig Carnelia (Sweet Smell of Success), Mary Rodgers (Once Upon a Mattress) and Susan Birkenhead (The Triumph of Love), Micki Grant (Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope). The effect is a memento… a fanfare for the common man giving insight into the lives and thoughts of the heroes of the workplace. The play, originally produced in 1973, has been revised twice. It explores how we feel about our jobs and our choice of jobs. It also challenges viewers to ponder the author’s early question, &quotWhat is it you do for a living, and why do you do it?&quot The performance is directed by Keith Hight, a Visiting Assistant Professor in the ECSU Art Department. Hight comes to ECSU from Seattle, WA where he taught at Olympic College and worked in professional theater and a touring performer.
