Regional Public School Students Participate in Pre-College Program

On April 28 Elizabeth City State University was one of four UNC system universities to host the annual North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) Pre-College Program Day.
According to ECSU’s NC-MSEN program director Milton Bond more than 40 area middle and high school students participated in the day-long event on campus. The students competed for medals in mathematics science engineering oratory writing art and quiz bowl competitions.
The aim of ECSU’s NC-MSEN Pre-College Program is to help increase the number of students who might pursue math or science academic majors and subsequently careers. The program recruits and prepares students in grades 6 through 12 who have not been exposed to these areas of study.
The program provides these opportunities to students from across the northeast North Carolina region. These counties include Pasquotank Camden Currituck Chowan Perquimans Bertie Gates and Hertford.
Aside from the April event the program also offers the Saturday Academy which meets throughout the academic year and a summer program which meets in June and July.
Other UNC schools participating in the NC-MSEN program are N.C. State UNC-Charlotte and Winston-Salem State University.
