Three members of the Elizabeth City State University Lady Viking volleyball team have been honored by the CIAA as released by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. Senior Christina Hager, freshman Xie’Ara Maybank-Smallings and head coach Linda Bell have been recognized as the Player, Rookie and Coach of the Week, respectively. All-CIAA performer Christina Hager receives the first Player of the Week recognition of her career after helping the Lady Vikings post a 2-0 record last week. In ECSU’s sweep of Saint Paul’s College last Friday, she collected 15 kills, 7 digs and a solo block, bringing her two-match total to 27 kills, 14 digs and 3 solo blocks. Hager leads the CIAA in blocks with a total of 70 (38 solo, 32 assisted), is 3rd in the conference in hitting percentage and 8th overall in kills. Xie’Ara Maybank-Smallings has been named CIAA Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. The freshman middle blocker/hitter hails from New Castle, DE, and ranks 2nd in the CIAA in hitting percentage and is 4th overall in blocks. Last week her best performance came against Peace College with 11 kills versus no hitting errors, 3 digs, 4 solo blocks and 3 blocks assisted. Fourth year head coach Linda Bell has been named CIAA Coach of the Week for the second time this season. The Lady Vikings (15-5 overall) are just two division wins away from wrapping up the CIAA Eastern Division title. They have won 15 of their last 17 matches, are a perfect 6-0 in the division and 10-1 in the CIAA. The Lady Vikings will return to action on October 12-13, 2007 as they travel to Shippensburg, PA to participate in a tournament hosted by Shippensburg University. The Lady Vikings will face West Chester on Friday at 5:00pm and will square off against Edinboro and Shippensburg at 10 am and noon, respectively on Saturday.
