The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings got their biggest win of the season on January 9 with an 87-62 win over Shaw University at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, NC. It was a monumental night for ECSU several reasons. First the win gave ECSU its first victory over the Lady Bears since 2002. Until Tuesday night, the Lady Bears were the only team that head coach Tara Owens was winless against. Finally, after a much decorated career, senior guard Deanna Price scored her 1,000th career point. As for the game itself, the Lady Vikings dominated from the opening tip. In route to a 44-28 halftime lead, ECSU jumped all over Shaw breaking out to a 17-4 lead after a Tiffany Smith jumper at the 14:27 mark. The Lady Bears would get to within 9 points after a score by Natalia Cothran that would be the last time the lead would be in single digits. The Lady Vikings’ lead extended to 20 points after an Ashley Bowman jumper with 18:57 remaining in the game. The point spread would not drop under 20 for the rest of the rest of the night. For her career achievement, Price entered the game needing one a basket. She had 12 points, 4 assists and 6 steals by the end of the game. All-American Celeste Trahan led all scorers with 21 points while Tanika Hudgins and Tiffany Smith added 19 and 12 points, respectively. The Lady Bears (6-6, CIAA 2-3) had two players to earn double figures– Jamie Goshen scoring 16 points off the bench and Na’Keisha Anthony contributed 14 points. The Lady Vikings (7-4, CIAA 5-0) will return to action at the 2007 King/Witherspoon Classic on Saturday, January 13, 2007. Tip-off in slated for 1:30 pm at the R.L. Vaughan Center and admission is free for all. For more information on ECSU Athletics visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
