Golf tournament supports ECSU athletics

Elizabeth City State University Athletics sponsored the Inaugural Golf Tournament on July 18, 2014 that was hosted by The Pines Country Club of Elizabeth City. The goal was to raise $10,000 for Athletic and Golf Scholarships, which was accomplished. The golf tournament attracted 81 golfers that equated to 27 three-person teams. To further show strong business and local support for the tournament, there were 52 hole sponsors and more than 20 businesses and individuals that donated more than $4,000. The planning committee consisted of the following 16 people: Lin Dawson, Co-Chair/Director of Athletics Lavern Jones, Co-Chair, ECSCU Golf Coach Jeanette Evans, President-National Alumni Association Betty Lyons Reuben Godfrey David Mascitti, of The Pines-Golf Pro Rick Durren, of Biggs Pontiac Linda Hughes, Friend of the University Dale Horn, of Golden Corral Jeff Dixon , of City Beverage Company Ronald Woodard, ECSU Athletic Staff Jennifer Priest, ECSU Institutional Advancement staff Ruth Williams, ECSU Cheerleading Coach Kim Owen, of Comfort Inn & Suites Owen Hassell, sports reporter with The Daily Advance Roger McLean, of R. A. McLean & Associates Tax Services The first, second, and third place teams received gift certificates that totaled $750. In addition, we issued $200 in gift certificates to the longest drive and closest to the pin for men and women. The Rev. Glen Sawyer provided our invocation and provided by Chancellor Charles Becton greeted the crowd and commended them for their support of the university. We were delighted to present two members of the ECSU Golf Team as a part of the tournament. Alston Meads, who is a sophomore at ECSU, and Tyler Futrell, a fall 2014 freshman, participated. The ECSU Foundation, the ECSU Viking Varsity Club and the National Alumni Association strongly supported the event. The Athletics Department greatly appreciates all the participants and supporters.
