G.R. Little Library celebrates National Library Week

Join the staff at the G. R. Little Library at Elizabeth City State University in celebration of National Library Week, April 14 – 18. The theme for the week is &quotLives Change @ Your Library.&quot On April 16 at 3 p.m. meet guest inspirational speaker, author, and radio host, S. Denice Newton from Wilson, North Carolina in room #227 of the G. R. Little Library. Newton will discuss her book, &quotTwo Continents One Hope: Searching the Atlantic for the Souls of Black People. She is the second author who recently visited the campus. Friends of the Library brought guest speaker and author Lori Beard-Daily for their April 5 fundraiser luncheon. She discussed her novel &quotDestination D&quot, a story of three southern friends from Spelman College who make a promise they can’t keep. Dr. Juanita Midgette-Spence, director of the G. R. Little Library, admits it is a pleasure to bring authors with their recent publications to the campus. &quotIt’s our pleasure to bring guest authors to campus. Their appearance not only lures readers to the library but allows patrons to come face to face with the person behind the text on the book pages,&quot Midgette-Spence, said. &quotPatrons in the audience may have an interest in writing and publishing, so it’s good for them to see and hear first-hand the challenges related to that process.&quot &quotLori Beard-Daily shared some of the challenges she encountered while working with publishers. You form a greater appreciation for the books on the shelves when you periodically meet the authors who write them. No matter what’s on your calendar each month, take the time to discover something new at the library.&quot In addition to &quotDestination D,&quot Beard-Daily is the author of two plays. An alumna of Spelman College, Beard-Daily ran her own public relations and advertising agency for 13 years. The G.R Little Library placed Beard-Daily’s book and several other new publications on display on the ground floor of the library. Another event scheduled for National Library Week includes poetry presentations by ECSU students, FreeMINDZ Poetry Club, at 3:30 p.m. on April 17 in the G. R. Little Theatre.
