Four Vikings earn CIAA football honors

October 23, 2006After their 36-0 win over Shaw University Saturday, four members of the Elizabeth City State University football team have garnered weekly conference honors as announced by the CIAA office Sunday afternoon. For the second consecutive week freshman Justin Hamilton has been named CIAA Rookie of the Week. As the Vikings posted their fourth shutout of the 2006 season on Saturday afternoon, Hamilton had another multi interception performance with 3 picks returned for 20 yards and two solo tackles. On the offensive side offensive lineman Ronnie McClary, wide receiver Chris Carter and quarterback Curtis Rich, Jr. all played big roles to keep the Bear’s defense at bay. McClary, a native of Goldsboro, NC, anchored the offensive line as ECSU tallied 466 yards of total offense (310 passing, 156 rushing) while allowing no sacks. This marks the fourth time this season that McClary has been named the top offensive lineman in the CIAA. Winston-Salem, NC native Chris Carter gets his third Receiver of the Week nod after catching 6 passes for a career high 140 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday. Carter currently leads the CIAA in scoring (66 points), touchdown receptions (11) while ranking 3rd in both reception per game and receiving yards per game. Rich continue to impress he has now thrown 19 touchdowns in 2006 which ranks second best in the conference. A native of Fort Washington, MD, Rich threw for a career high 310 yards on 19-of-21 passing against Shaw. His 4 touchdown passes on Saturday marked the third time this season he has throw for four scores in a game. A four-time recipient of CIAA Offensive Back of the Week, he also carried the ball 7 times for 49 yards against the Bears. The Vikings 7-1 (CIAA 5-0) will head to Lawrenceville, VA on October 28th to face the Saint Paul’s College Tigers. Game time is slated for 1:30 pm.
