ECSU Vikings top Saint Paul’s College

Elizabeth City State guard Anthony Hilliard led four scorers in double figures as the Vikings upended Saint Paul’s College 82-67 Thursday night at the Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium. Hilliard led all players with game highs of 30 points and 17 rebounds for his 30th career double-double. Matt Nowlin scored 20 points, connecting on six three-pointers for the second consecutive game while Olajuwon Johnson and Anthony Butler chipped in with 11 points apiece. The Vikings out-rebounded the Tigers 48-36 and took a 49-38 lead into the locker room at halftime. ECSU never trailed in the game and led by as many as 19 points in the first half. The Tigers did close the gap to nine points (54-45) in the opening minutes of the second half but a three-point by Matt Nowlin followed by an Anthony Hilliard lay-up pushed the lead back to double digits for duration on the contest. The Tigers (5-7) were paced by Marcus Mitchell and Maurice Reevey with 20 and 11 points, respectively. ECSU (11-4, CIAA 5-3) will return to action in an ESPN nationally televised game against Virginia Union University on Sunday, January 27 at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
