ECSU Summer Programs Keep Kids Busy Learning
Summer brain drain it’s a term coined to describe kids leaving school and intellectual stimulation behind for the summer months. And if it’s something parents worry over they only need to look as close as Elizabeth City State University for summer fun that stimulates and educates middle and high school students and even one for senior citizens.
This summer beginning June 12 and running through August there will be nine programs on the ECSU campus. The programs range from the NASA MUREP Aerospace Academy – a summer favorite – to mathematics girl empowerment and basketball.
Each program brings world-class educators together with area students and raises the bar on summer fun. Here is a look at the available programs:
ECSU Summer Transportation Institute
The Summer Transportation Institute introduces high school students to potential STEM career opportunities that exist in the area of transportation.

NASA MUREP Aerospace Academy (Summer 2017)
Activities will introduce students to STEM fields to careers in aerospace through a balanced mix of theory hands-on activities field trips and guest lectures.

Pathways in Mathematics Education and Remote Sensing (PiMERS) Middle School Program
This is a joint effort between ECSU and NASA Langley Research Center. Working with NASA programs students will focus on STEM subjects such as computer information science and engineering.

Department of Mathematics and Computer Science /ECSU-NC-MSEN Summer Transportation Institute (Middle School)
This summer institute impacts middle school students by providing career awareness and learning experiences that focus on transportation and related courses of study. Students will enroll in five classes (1) Enhancement (2) Math (3)Entrepreneurship (4) Career Exploration and (5) SeaPerch Designing. During this four week period students will be exposed to rigorous hands-on inquiry-based activities and lab experiences in STEM.

Upward Bound
Students receive the opportunity to live on the university campus and participate in cultural enrichment activities which provide students with insights and experiences that will generate the motivation necessary to proceed with furthering their education.

Camp Empower
Girls participate in daily brainstorming and group discussions personal vision and goal manifestation activities confidence team-building and leadership sessions. Innovative and creative business development projects and games will introduce concepts of financial literacy entrepreneurial pursuits and community service while developing the existing talents and skills of our young ladies.

NASA MUREP Aerospace Academy (Summer 2017)
The NASA MUREP Aerospace Academy of Northeastern North Carolina (NENC) is a collaborative effort between NASA Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) and six satellite school system sites: Bertie Windsor Elizabeth City/Pasquotank Halifax Enfield Green Snow Hill Martin Williamston and Perquimans.
This STEM enrichment program engages middle school students in activities that improve their analytical skills. Participants will develop and strengthen the skills and knowledge needed for success in STEM studies and STEM Careers.
This year’s theme “A Mission to Mars” will use STEM skills to design construct and simulate a virtual trip to Mars utilizing activities through both individual and group work with cooperative learning that reinforces hands-on and classroom learning.

ECSU Viking Auxiliary Team to Host Youth Basketball Camp
Campers will work closely with Camp Director Coach Ronald Nixon the ECSU coaching staff and student assistants for individual instructions and in competition situation.
