ECSU students find new outlook on life while studying abroad

Elizabeth City State University continues to move forward in international programs. ECSU is striving to equip its students with the 21st Century skills necessary for success in a globalized society. The option to study abroad is one example of ECSU’s commitment to developing cultural competency in its students.

Torian Lee, ECSU as the Coordinator of International Programs, has worked diligently since 2008 to inform ECSU students of the opportunities to study abroad.

&quotWith the support of administrators, faculty, and staff at both ECSU and the UNC-Exchange Program (UNC-EP), ECSU is a viable participant in the study abroad program,&quot Lee said. &quotOur students have gone abroad and returned excited about their experiences.&quot&ampnbsp

During 2009-2010, ECSU sent six students to study for a semester at universities in Australia, Germany, and Mexico.&ampnbsp In exchange, ECSU received students from universities in Sweden, Germany, and Denmark.&ampnbsp In the future, ECSU will provide additional study abroad opportunities through the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) and faculty initiated partnerships.

Terrance Trapp, a junior majoring in math and computer science, studied at Charles Sturt University in Australia. He studied there August 2009 through December 2009.

&quotIn my opinion, the opportunity to study abroad is not just an opportunity to study in another country.&ampnbsp It opens the door to a world of opportunity.&quot

Matthew Competiello, a junior majoring in political science, studied at The University of Mannheim in Germany. He also studied there August 2009 through December 2009.

&quotThat was the best opportunity ever!&ampnbsp Studying abroad changed me it changed my outlook on life and gave me new confidence to embark on newer, riskier opportunities.&quot

ECSU students can also join campus organizations that have a focus on international education.&ampnbsp The International Club and the Global Leadership Academy engage students in a host of activities that promote global awareness and leadership.&ampnbsp In the fall, students from the Global Leadership Academy presented in front of a statewide audience at the North Carolina Association of International Educators Student Leadership Conference.&ampnbsp This was held at Appalachian State University.&ampnbsp The International Club hosts events such as movie nights, showcasing foreign films.&ampnbsp Both groups also participate in ECSU’s International and American Education Week activities, held in November of each year.

In the fall of 2009 ECSU launched the Office of International Programs Website.&ampnbsp It is a one stop shop of information for students who are curious about international opportunities.&ampnbsp
