Join Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) on March 11-12 as the university commemorates its founding 131 years ago. Each year, university faculty and staff, alumni, and friends gather for the Founders Day Convocation, followed by the Scholarship Gala. These events are open to the public and ECSU hopes community members will participate in the celebrations.

The Founders Day Scholarship Gala is hosted by the ECSU Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises scholarship funding for deserving students. Scholarships honor the academic and personal achievements of our scholars, and this event recognizes the dedication and devotion students put towards their studies, as well as their community involvement.

$100 of the cost of the ticket is a tax-deductible gift to the Foundation’s general scholarship fund
In addition, the Chancellor’s Legacy Awards will be presented to this year’s honorees who have demonstrated a standard of excellence that defines and shapes ECSU as an institution. Read more about the 2022 Legacy Honorees.
NOTE: As the nation continues to address the COVID pandemic, this year’s event will be virtual to avoid a closed space with 300+ individuals.
Convocation Details
Please join ECSU the day before (March 11) for the Founder’s Day Convocation. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Patricia “Trish” Rhyne Johnson. Johnson is an ECSU alum, a life-long learner, and an educator who retired in June 2018 after 39 years of service to the students and families of North Carolina Public Schools. In 1994, Johnson was appointed principal in Catawba County Schools – the first African American woman to serve as principal in the district after desegregation.
