Recycyclemania results are in! With almost a 30% recycling rate, Elizabeth City State University placed 135/274 nationally, 4th in the state of North Carolina, and 1st in the UNC system for the overall challenge. Student Government Association and the Office of Sustainability hosted Recyclemania’s kick off in February by distributing recycle bins for student’s dorm rooms, and hosting environmentally friendly trivia. ECSU Green Council visited student dorms and showed where students can drop off their recycling. Members of Kappa Alpha Psi and the ECSU Community Relations Committee expanded the recycle raids into M. D. Thorpe Administration Building, where they searched recycle bins to ensure proper use and emptied full bins. RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste, and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling. With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.
