ECSU maintains operating hours

University Advisory An incident that happened over the weekend has had no affect on the regular operating hours of the university. ECSU classes and offices will resume regular operating hours on September 7 and September 8. Elizabeth City State University Campus Police collaborated with Elizabeth City Police early Saturday morning, September 1, after hearing gun shots fired on the campus. The Campus Police responded to the area and successfully stopped one of three vehicles that attempted to flee a university parking lot. Campus Police requested assistance from the Elizabeth City Police Department to remain alert for suspicious vehicles fitting the description of the fleeing vehicles. The local police successfully stopped a red Chevy Tahoe as described by Campus Police. They found two hand guns-a .45 revolver and a 9mm semi automatic weapon– among the seven occupants. The Campus Police charged all seven with discharging a fire arm on state property having a gun on educational property. None of the suspects are ECSU students. The Elizabeth City Police also charged the suspects with possession of stolen fire arm six were charged with carrying a concealed weapon. One juvenile was among the seven suspects. ECSU Campus Police were able to use surveillance equipment to identify the vehicles involved and suspects in question. The Campus Police returned to the area where shots were fired and found empty ammunition cartridges. Students are advised to use their entrance, ID cards in all areas where they apply and not allow non-students entry into residence halls. In the event of an emergency, dangerous situation or terribly suspicious situation where danger may arise, students are encouraged to report the incident to Campus Police, 335-3266 as well as the nearest ECSU staff or faculty member. ECSU Campus Police Chief Beamon provided the following statement: &quotNone of the suspects were ECSU students. This incident reflects a case where the suspects came from the community to the campus.
