Dr. Ronald Blackmon named Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

August 12, 2005 Chancellor Mickey L. Burnim is pleased to announce that after a national search and upon today’s approval by the UNC Board of Governors, Dr. Ronald H. Blackmon has been named vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at Elizabeth City State University. Since July 2005, Dr. Blackmon has been serving as interim in that position. Dr. Blackmon’s education, experience, and accomplishments in teaching, research, and leadership, along with his commitment to the academic progress at ECSU made him an outstanding candidate for the vice chancellor position. In 1989, Dr. Blackmon began his tenure at Elizabeth City State University as an assistant professor and since that time has continuously progressed as a faculty member and as an academic administrator, having served as chairman of the Biology Department and dean of the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology. Dr. Blackmon has enhanced the curriculum throughout these years developing several new academic programs, including bachelor’s degrees in molecular biology, biotechnology and aviation science, and master’s degrees in biology and mathematics. Also, he has conducted notable biology and biotechnology research at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and has excelled in other research as the result of grants from such agencies as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. Dr. Blackmon is well-respected for his teaching, research, publishing, and service by academicians and researchers both internal and external to ECSU. Prior to coming to ECSU, Dr. Blackmon served as a research technician at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, D.C. He received a B.S. in Biology from Delaware State University, and a M.S. in Zoology and Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Howard University.
