Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant brings $3000 to the community

Elizabeth City State University’s Community Development Program is primarily known for its role as a non-profit agency that addresses the housing and community development needs of residents who live in rural northeastern North Carolina. Yet it also had the capacity to assist other non-profit organizations with their need for resources that support community social and educational initiatives.One example of the Community Development Program’s efforts to assist another organization is with the recent award of a $3000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Morris Autry director of the Community Development Program collaborated with the Elizabeth City State University Foundation to apply for a youth literacy grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Once selected they referred the funding to the Elizabeth City Boys and Girls Club. The funds will be used to purchase equipment to support their literacy initiatives. Autry said the decision to apply for a grant that would ultimately benefit another organization is not uncommon. "The Community Development Program applied for the grant in compliance of its mission to offer technical assistance to organizations who serve the community. This grant will assist the Elizabeth City Boys and Girls Club to purchase books educational materials or software for literacy programs." According to Morris Autry director of the ECSU Community Development Program assisting another organization with their search for funding is an important service they can provide. "Our goal is to ultimately help students attending the club who may be reading below grade level or experience difficulty reading." Autry and Ms. Dorothy Dixon executive director of the Elizabeth City Boys and Girls Club hope this initiative will be the boost they need to establish a reading room and mini library at the club which recently located to its new location in the old Elizabeth City Middle School at 306 N. Road Street.
