“Elizabeth City State University, Community Connections, and the Department of Music and Visual Arts are pleased to welcome back alumnus Tshombe Shelby. From his humble beginnings as a member of the ECSU University Choir, we are very proud of a fellow ‘Viking’ for his tenacity, work ethic and accomplishments,” said Douglas Jackson, ECSU Associate Professor of Music. “Tshombe is a positive role model for our undergraduate music majors and an ambassador for Elizabeth City State University.”
Selby developed his love for opera while working and studying in New York City at The Metropolitan Opera House (The Met). In 2015, Selby made his debut as tenor soloist at Carnegie Hall’s world premiere of Exodus written by Earnestine Rodgers Robinson.
- In 2018, Selby was an emerging artist at the Opera NUOVA festival in Edmonton Alberta Canada, and he also participated in the music festival in Kiev, Ukraine, that year.
- In 2019, Selby performed in the chorus for The Met’s production of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung, and then the Grammy-award winning ensemble of Porgy and Bess.
- During the 2021-2022 Met season, Tshombe will perform in two concerts and five productions, including the critically acclaimed opera Fire Shut Up in My Bones.
Selby is a recipient of the Clifton D. Clark Fellowship at Binghamton University in New York; he will receive a master’s degree in Opera this spring.
