Makitta Whitehurst-McLean, director of the Office of Career Services, says she is ready to welcome students back for a full semester of preparing them for the job hunt.
Students can research assorted career paths, and use online career assessments to determine the best major for them at the Office of Career Services. Services include resume and cover letter preparation, mock interviewing, and selecting appropriate, professional attire for various work settings. Whitehurst-McLean routinely schedules professional development workshops on the following topics: How to prepare for a Career Fair, Internships, Interviewing Skills, Job Search Strategies, Networking & Personal Branding, and Graduate School Assistance. Attendance at those workshops, she insists, shouldn’t be comprised solely of graduating seniors.
The fall Career Fair will be held October 21, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., in the gymnasium of the R.L. Vaughan Center. On November 13, three students will attend the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. This conference is a five-day leadership experience that exposes students to professionals who address topics such as personal branding, career-building skills, financial literacy and international exposure.
The newest TMCF Program – The APPLE HBCU SCHOLARS PROGRAM will offer a one-year scholarship to 30 students who are selected as Apple Scholars. This award will be applied to the scholars’ final year of study. More importantly, the inaugural class of scholars will learn how to enhance their resumes and determine how to best develop skills valued by the top tech companies in the world.
“The start of fall semester isn’t just the start of a new academic year. It’s the time to prepare for life after college,” Whitehurst-McLean said. “Students are always welcome to visit the Career Services Center to use the resources available here. We cover topics from dining etiquette to hiring trends. You won’t find that much information anywhere else.”
