Business students earn new honor status
The Elizabeth City State University chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma begins 2016 with a new badge. Dr. Joy Smith, one of three faculty advisors for the chapter, said the chapter earned high honor status last semester, which is based on a selection of suitable chapter activities completed in the prior year.
“We applied in July of 2015 and received the award in November. As a result, we were awarded student scholarships to the Beta Gamma Sigma Global Leadership Summit which was held in Orlando last November,” Smith said. “Two students, Ian Hanson, and TimMay Beale, attended and were impressed by the variety of speakers and business owners who attended.”
Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) is an international honor society that serves business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The organization’s mission is to encourage and honor academic achievement in the study of business, to cultivate and celebrate leadership and professional excellence, to advance the values of the Society, and to serve its lifelong members. Smith said she encourages ECSU students to join because they can continue participating and networking with outstanding professionals long after graduating from the university.
“Earning the Beta Gamma Sigma certificate is a significant accomplishment for our students and the organization can keep members abreast of current topics and help them to build their business,” Smith said. “In the past we’ve inducted juniors and seniors majoring in business administration and accounting into this chapter. For the first time, we inducted a second semester sophomore last semester. We are proud to see that kind of achievement in our students.”
There are nearly 530 BGS chapters throughout the U.S., with chapters in all 50 states and in more than 25 countries and territories. Members of ECSU’s chapter include TimMay Beale, Lindsay Norris, Kimberly Peters, Brittney Webb, Catherine Smith, Ashley Knight, Tracy Swain, Devin Cherry, Kaija Gregory, Sergio Fletes, Kendal Halsey, Brian Hyman, Kayla Norfleet, Mallory Miller, Conley Winslow, Ashley Larson and Joel Gonzalez-Santiago.
Advisors for ECSU’s chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma are Dr. Freda McBride, Dr. Joy Smith. and Dr. Yan Jin.
