It’s January, so it’s time to reserve space on the calendar for all that’s new in your life. Start by slating time for &quotChamber Chat,&quot a new show on WRVS FM 89.9. It begins at 4 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month when on-air host Clay Mercer interviews Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce President Kelly Thorsby. The show is certain to enlighten listeners of the bountiful schedule of events that successfully links local businesses to consumers. Thorsby said she is looking forward to sharing the organization’s message with listeners. &quotOn the first show I covered topics such as the Chamber Annual Dinner Meeting on Feb. 26, the Chamber Business Expo on April 21 &amp 22 and a survey to determine which topics interest students,&quot Thorsby said. &quotI want this radio segment to not only be informative of chamber events that the students are welcome to attend, but also be a valuable resource for them.&quot Thorsby has attended several events on campus that include annual university celebrations and departmental events such as last year’s ribbon cutting for the Accounting Department’s new finance lab. Early in July of 2014 the Chamber of Commerce staff brought &quotSpeed Networking&quot to Williams Hall where several members exchanged business cards, descriptions of their businesses and enjoyed tours of the radio station, WRVS FM 89.9. Now students and listeners across the Albemarle and lower Hampton Roads will hear more details about the goods and services available in Elizabeth City. Thorsby and the staff are eager to help professors show ECSU students how their skills and education are relevant in local business, education, recreation and government. Three interns have worked at the Chamber in recent years. The Chamber also hosts an annual Ground Hog Shadow Day for area 8th graders to tour local businesses, colleges/universities, government sites so they can identify career options. Whether it’s helping students learn about the real application of skills, or informing business owners of opportunities to interact with consumers, the Chamber of Commerce helps us realize the important roles we play in the Harbor of Hospitality. Business owners and staff should remain alert for Thorsby’s Quick Tip- each month to learn how to market themselves and their businesses. Other tips will be related to successful leadership.
