ECSU Cancels In-Person 2020 Homecoming Events
Elizabeth City State University’s in-person 2020 homecoming activities will not take place due to concerns over COVID-19, university officials announced today.
According to ECSU Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon, based on guidance from public health officials, and feedback from university alumni, the homecoming football game will take place, but all other week-long activities are cancelled. The decision is based upon a concern for the health and well-being of the Viking community, she said.
“We know the week-long celebration, originally slated for Oct. 18-25, is a cherished part of the ECSU experience, and we hope that you will show your Viking spirit and celebrate with us virtually,” said Chancellor Dixon. “We do plan to live stream the football game with virtual appearances and celebrations during pre-game and half-time shows.”
This year’s homecoming game is scheduled to take place on Oct. 24. The game will be held with reduced fan capacity, pending state restrictions. The Athletic Department will share additional details for the game, complete football season and related activities such as tailgating, operational plans and fan engagement at a later date.
ECSU will also provide more details about the virtual football game day celebrations, and how fans can continue to support ECSU.
“This was not an easy decision for us, but the health and well-being of our community is a priority,” said Chancellor Dixon.
