ECSU Alum Named Bertie County Schools Superintendent
An Elizabeth City State University graduate has been named the next superintendent of Bertie County Schools. Dr. Ottis Smallwood, a Bertie County native, graduated from ECSU in 1993 with a degree in mathematics education.
Dr. Smallwood, who holds a masters from East Carolina University and a doctorate from Nova Southeastern University, has worked in the region as an educator throughout his career. He has worked for Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools, Bertie County Schools, for the Roanoke River Valley Education Consortium, and Jones County Public Schools.
Throughout his career, Dr. Smallwood has received numerous awards. Most recently he was awarded The Dr. Sam Houston Leadership Award for the Aspiring Superintendent’s Program sponsored by the North Carolina School Superintendent’s Association.
He was also selected as 2019 Kappa Man of the Year of the New Bern, North Carolina Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
