Middle and high school students learn about the scientific principles behind hot air balloons during an aviation summer program in 2018. A number of ECSU summer programs are still accepting applications.
Summer is near and that means Elizabeth City State University summer programs are accepting applications. Here is a list of programs currently accepting applications:
Upward Bound Scholars Academy

Intensive Math and Writing Boot Camp
STEM Computer Science Camp
The Non Residential component of the Upward Bound Program is designed to strengthen the math, reading and writing skills of rising 9th and 10th grade students. Additionally, students will be exposed to STEM and Computer Science concepts that will deepen their knowledge of the area and assist them with developing/using critical thinking and inquiry-based learning skills.

The Residential component of the Upward Bound is designed to generate in its participants, the skills and motivation necessary to persist in, enter into and complete a program of secondary and post-secondary education. The summer instructional component is a four week intensive academic, vocational and social development program, designed to establish and maintain excellence in education. Students receive the opportunity to live on the university campus and participate in academic and cultural activities which provide students with insights and experiences that will generate the motivation necessary to proceed with their education.

National Summer Transportation Institute at ECSU

The STI program at ECSU is funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and is in its 20th year. The goal of the program is to expose high school students to careers in transportation and how STEM training is the key to obtain theses careers. The four-week program covers topics in physics, electronics, programming, computer-aided-design, and mathematics. Lectures are complimented by weekly field trips and guest speakers. The theme of this summer’s STI program is Designing and Programming Robotic Ground Vehicles.

The National Summer Transportation Institute is geared to introducing STEM careers in transportation. Our program will impact middle school students by providing career awareness and learning experiences that focus on transportation and related courses of study. Students will enroll in five classes; Enhancement, STEM, Entrepreneurship, Career Exploration, and Project Designing. During this four-week period, students will be exposed to rigorous hands- on, inquiry-based activities and lab experiences in STEM. The summer session will include field trips and other activities that incorporate self-discovery, cooperative learning, goal setting, career exploration, as well as academic/career advising.

The Virginia – North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation chapter of Elizabeth City State University is a one week, structured pre-college enrichment program tailored for rising college freshmen. Boot camp participants develop and strengthen the skills and knowledge needed for success in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
