G.R. Little Library Announces New Online Database for Faculty Articles

Back in August Elizabeth City State University’s G.R. Little Library launched the first-ever institutional repository, online database for published papers and articles. Now faculty members who publish papers and articles can submit that work to a list of publications.

According to the ECSU director of library services, Dr. Juanita Midgette Spence, the ECSU repository has joined forces with 10 other North Carolina universities, increasing university and faculty visibility across the state and beyond. Increased visibility, she explained, means more citations and subsequently more impact for the faculty work listed in the repository.

“Studies show that traditionally published articles that are also posted in an institutional repository receive a significantly greater number of citations than others not posted,” said Dr. Spence.

Dr. Spence also noted that by listing an article with the repository, researchers around the globe who may not be able to afford a professional journal subscription will have direct access to faculty work.

“Finally, the institutional repository provides a permanent URL for your work and a convenient place to story and access your scholarship when you need to self-reference in a future article or refer colleagues and students,” she said.

The repository is open to faculty, staff, and students who are publishing honors papers or papers required for graduate degrees. People are being asked to submit work to the NC Docks site by sending it to ncdocks@ecsu.onmicrosoft.com.

“NC Docks is a great way of validating and displaying the value of the ECSU’s intellectual capital to society outside the classroom,” said Dr. Spence.
