Community Development Program receives $227,000 in grants

October 18, 2005 The Community Development Program at Elizabeth City State University received five grants for approximately $227,000. The sources and the amount of those grants follow as well as a brief description of the grants’ purpose: Consumer Action Inc./Capital One ($2,000)
To conduct financial literacy seminars and counseling for prospective homebuyers, youth, and low wealth families, primarily in Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ($28,205)
To raise awareness of childhood lead poisoning and reduce incidences of lead poisoning among children in northeastern North Carolina through a variety of education and outreach efforts including seminars, workshops, and media services. October 23-29 is National Lead Poison Prevention Week. Corporation for National and Community Service – AmeriCorps*VISTA ($45,000 value)
The Corporation for National and Community Service will provide stipends for two persons to assist staff in carrying out housing and community development outreach projects designed to benefit low wealth families in rural northeastern North Carolina. UD Housing Counseling Program ($51,887)
To provide comprehensive housing counseling services to potential homeowners, renters, first-time homebuyers, and homeowners experiencing mortgage default/delinquency difficulties in six-county northeastern NC target area HUD Fair Housing Initiatives Program ($99,968)
To expand housing choices for residents in northeastern NC through implementation of education and outreach activities designed to prevent or eliminate discriminatory housing practices in the sale, rental or financing of housing based upon race, color, religion, sex, handicap, or family status The purpose of the Community Development Program is to serve the community as source of information and grants pertaining to housing and community development.
