Golf Clinics begin February 18

February 15, 2006 On February 18, the first of five &quotLearn to Play&quot Golf Clinics will be held for adults at the Albemarle Golf Park on Weeksville Road in Elizabeth City (NC). The golf clinics have a two-fold purpose. In addition to participants learning the game, the proceeds from the five golf-clinic package-available for $100-will go toward scholarships for the Elizabeth City State University Student Golf Team through the ECSU Foundation-Golf Divas Fund. The Golf Divas Fund was established by a group of women golfers who organized in 2003 for the joy of the sport, receiving clinics from ECSU Head Golf Coach Lavern Jones. To support Coach Jones and the ECSU golf program through provision of student-athlete scholarships, each member of the Golf Divas initially made a $100 contribution to the fund. Each year since, the fund has grown. This year, the Golf Divas, seek to increase funds-now at over $2,000-to at least $5,000, so that the fund account can be endowed for scholarships through the ECSU Foundation. As an endowed fund, the annual interest will be used to fund scholarships annually. These golf clinics also serve as a preface to the ECSU Foundation Golf Classic, formerly known as the Clifton Davis Golf Classic, to be held on April 21-22. The five golf clinics provide an opportunity for participants to learn or prepare for this classic and advance their skills just in time for the golf season. Designed for golfers or &quotto-be&quot golfers, each of the five clinics will begin at 10 a.m. on the Saturdays of February 18, March 11, March 18, April 8, and April 15. To kick off the first clinic, a registration and welcome session will be held in Room 138 in the Jenkins Science Center at Elizabeth City State University, followed by the first clinic on that day at the Albemarle Golf Park at 11 a.m. ECSU Golf Coach Lavern Jones will conduct the golf clinics. David Mascitti, PGA Professional at The Pines Country Club, will also lend his expertise for this worthwhile endeavor. Rick Flower, an ECSU alumnus and owner of the Albemarle Golf Park, has donated use of the driving range and golf balls for the clinic.
