Suwabi African Ballet performs at ECSU on Sept. 29

September 27, 2006 The Lyceum Series at Elizabeth City State University presents the Suwabi African Ballet at 7 p.m. on September 29 at the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. This troupe founded in Newport News,VA uses African instruments, folklore, authentic costumes, classical African dance and songs to depict life’s history, its ironies and surprises. The founding director, Ofosuwa M. Abiola-Tamba, has been dancing over 38 years and was named a master dancer by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. She is also an instructor, choreographer and director and has displayed those skills through the Caribbean Islands, Gambia and a number of northeastern states in the US. Their performance is free of charge because the university provides the Lyceum Series for the community’s cultural enrichment. For more information, please call 252-335-3279.
