Explore the sea, rainbows and salt crystals in September

The Deep Blue Sea is the focus of Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science, Saturday, September 8. Mandi Young, who was selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the Teacher-at-Sea program, will present the program about the sea creatures that live deep in the ocean. Programs are at 9:30 and 11 a.m. The program is free, thanks to the program sponsor, Gateway Bank. Reservations are required. September’s Toddler Time will look at Beauty of Rainbows on Thursday, September 20. Children will explore the science of rainbows and the color spectrum and will make their own rainbow scope to take home. The one-hour program for two and three-year-olds will begin at 9:30 the program for four-and-five-year-olds begins at 11 a.m. Cost for the program is $5. per family and reservations are required. Parents or guardians must accompany the child. Reservations begin September 1. The Science of Salt Crystals is the Make-It-Take-It for September. Stop in Port Discover to make your own salt growing crystal experiment to take home. After your crystals are complete, come back to Port Discover to take an even better look at them under the microscope. The activity is free to children visiting the center, thanks to a grant from the City of Elizabeth City. Make-It-Take-Its are available during hours Port Discover is open, Tuesday – Saturday 1 – 5 p.m. Reservations for Port Discover’s programs begin the first day of the month for that month’s programs. In September, reservations will begin on September 1. Port Discover members can register beginning August 15. Port Discover is located at 613 E. Main Street.
